Pakistan has experienced a wave of militant violence since July last year after the Special Operations attack on the Lal Masjid in Islamabad। Hundreds of people have been killed in these incidents, including many members of the security forces. Violence subsided after a new coalition governmentwas formed after the February elections and it decided to negotiate with the militants.
The lull in violence was, however, shortlived. Militants stepped up their attacks after Pakistan Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud suspended his talks with the government in June.
